Our day is a day of weak men. We live in a culture that directs men to live in the moment, to pursue our lusts, and to get what you can. This is not the way God designed man. When we consider the creation of man from Genesis 1 & 2, there are two important lessons that we must learn.
1) God intends men to be leaders. This means that men are to set the direction for the way of life for themselves and for those under their authority. The clearest places in Scripture where we see this are Genesis 3 and Romans 5. We see that God has placed headship responsibility on men for the leadership of churches and families.
Our monthly Saturday morning fellowship breakfasts aim at discipling and training me in godly leadership. We have used such books as Timothy Whitmer’s book Shepherd Leader at Home, Thomas Watson’s book The Godly Man’s Picture, J.C. Ryle’s work Thoughts for Young Men.
2) God intends men to be servants. Men are to serve as providers and protectors, and should give themselves to this end. And a man’s attitude should be as Jesus said John 15:13, “Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.”
Each Tuesday from 9:15am until 11:00am, the men gather in a group known as the White Horse Stable. While the name is a takeoff from another historical group – The Whitehorse Inn – the aim is the same. Provide an environment where men can wrestle with God’s Word and examine how Scripture speaks to the life situations that we find ourselves in. We have loosely studied a variety of books over the last 10 years; Ordinary and Putting Amazing Back Into Grace by Michael Horton, The Whole Christ by Sinclair Ferguson, and Transforming Grace by Jerry Bridges and Rules for Reformers by Douglas Wilson. We are currently studying the book of James.
